"Seeing other ladies compete in barbeque lets girls know they can do it too"

Tina Cannon is a lady pitmaster who from the start has been proving that she knows her way around the smoker just as well as any male. This seasoned pro competes in at least 20 competition a year, but Tina’s introduction to the barbeque world is a unique story. In 2009, after a tornado caused damage to her roof, she decided to treat the roofers who were working on her house to some of her tasty barbeque.

The owner of the roofing company looked straight at my husband and said ‘this is some great barbecue.’ Then my husband pointed at me and told him to ‘tell my wife,’” explained Tina. “He then continued to tell my husband about a barbeque contest that weekend and suggested that ‘we’ should enter. It was my first ever competition... and I won!”

This is Tina’s third year competing in Cowboy Charcoal’s Fire & Ice Women’s Championship Barbeque Series. She has always been very passionate about competitive barbeque and encouraging other ladies to give it a go. Tina shared her thoughts on the importance of a ladies-only competition like Fire & Ice.

“I think it’s awesome. On the circuit now you'll see dads bringing their daughters to competition to help. I think a competition like this really helps with the transformation we are seeing. Seeing other ladies compete in barbeque lets girls know they can do it too,” said Tina. “It helps teach them if you are a girl who likes to cook you don't have to bake cakes (not that there's anything wrong with it) but you can get in there, handle meat and do it just like anyone else can.”

Tina, who was the Fire & Ice runner-up in 2017, will go head-to-head with the other nine female finalists in a two-day finale challenge at the World Food Championships in November. The winner will take home a $10,000 prize pack, including some signature jewelry (the “ICE”) provided by Manning Jewelry out of Fairhope, Alabama. In addition to the barbeque competition, the ladies have the chance to win up to $15,000 in donations to the charity of her choice through the #QueWithPurpose contest.
