Janetta Mason

Survivor-Que

"When someone sees us girls out there doing it and being successful I think it encourages others to try.”

Jannetta Mason and her team Survivor-Que will be making a fiery return to Orange Beach, Alabama for the 3rd Annual Cowboy Charcoal Fire & Ice Women’s Championship Barbeque Series competition.

Janetta has been competing with her team for three years and she recently just won her first Grand Championship at Gillett Heritage Days event in Gillett, Arkansas back in May. With more experience under her belt, the returning pitmaster is heading into this year’s competition better prepared for the two-day female showdown. Not to mention, she is excited to show the barbeque community just what girls can do on the grill.

“This competition shows that we [girls] can hang with the boys. When someone sees my husband and me, they always think he is the cook. He always tells them to ‘talk to her I don't cook,’” said Janetta. When someone sees us girls out there doing it and being successful I think it encourages others to try.”

This Arkansas pitmaster says her favorite thing about barbeque isn’t the awards, but getting to see all the friends she has made at competitions. Janetta’s interest in barbeque first sparked from watching a popular tv show. Then shortly after, a friend encouraged her to enter her first barbeque competition, and from then on she was hooked.

“I have always loved cooking and started watching BBQ Pitmasters and thought I wanted to try it,” said Janetta.

Janetta, who finished in tenth place at the 2017 Fire & Ice competition, will go head-to-head with the other nine female finalists in a two-day finale challenge at the World Food Championships in November. The winner of the Fire & Ice championships will take home a $10,000 prize pack, including some signature jewelry (the “ICE”) provided by Manning Jewelry out of Fairhope, Alabama. Cowboy Charcoal will also match the Grand Prize earnings of the Fire & Ice Grand Champion with a check for $10,000 to the charity of her choice. Additionally, one of the ten finalists has a chance to earn a $5,000 donation to go towards the charity of her choice through the #QueWithPurpose social media contest.

Janetta charity is a cause that is close to her heart. Her charity, the Alzheimer’s Research Foundation, is dedicated to finding a cure for those who suffer from this progressive disease. Janetta’s father is affected by Alzheimer’s and she hopes that her participation in #QueWithPurpose will bring awareness and funding to help find a cure.
